How Magnesium Can Help You Sleep
Many people have trouble sleeping, and breaking the cycle of insomnia can be hard.
You can try changing your sleep routine and curbing your caffeine intake, but sometimes these lifestyle interventions fall short.
Supplements are another popular option. One supplement that’s gained some attention as a potential sleep aid is magnesium.
This mineral has wide-ranging effects in the body and may influence some of the processes that promote sleep. Read on to learn the connection between magnesium and a good night’s sleep.

Improved sleep quality
Some research indicates that L-theanine could be beneficial for a good night’s sleep. Researchers in one study found that doses of 250 mg and 400 mg of L-theanine greatly improved sleep in animals and humans. Also, 200 mg of L-theanine was shown to reduce resting heart rate, pointing to its ability to promote relaxation. L-theanine may also help boys diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) sleep better. A 2011 study looked at the effects of L-theanine on 98 boys aged 8 to 12. A randomized group was given two 100 mg chewable tablets of L-theanine twice daily. The other group received placebo pills. After six weeks, the group taking L-theanine was found to have had longer, more restful sleep. While the results are promising, more research is needed before it can be proven as safe and effective, especially for children. Other research found that L-theanine improved sleep quality for those diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Benefits of GABA
For sleep: The body’s own GABA activity is important for sleep. GABA enables the body and mind to relax and fall asleep, and to sleep soundly throughout the night. Low GABA activity is linked to insomnia and disrupted sleep. In one study, GABA levels in people with insomnia were almost 30 percent lower than in people without the sleep disorder. And these low GABA levels also corresponded to more restless, wakeful sleep. Sleep medications including those with zolpidem (Ambien and others) and eszopiclone (Lunesta and others) target the body’s GABA system to increase sedation and sleep. Research indicates that one negative side effect of these sleep medications — hallucinations — may result from their alterations to GABA activity.

Phellodendron (Phellodendron amurense) barks are medicinal plants commonly used as traditional remedies for reducing stress and anxiety.
The relationship between chronic psychological stress and reduced health is well established, with psychological stress having been shown to increase susceptibility to a wide range of diseases including anxiety, depression, diabetes, and obesity. Even the “stress” of short-term sleep loss has significant implications for long-term health and well-being due to adverse systemic health effects including suppressed immune function, abdominal obesity, insomnia, depression, and generalized fatigue.

Velvet bean, also known as Mucuna pruriens, is a climbing legume that also has its heritage in Ayurvedic medicine. Both of these agents have been reported anecdotally to improve sleep quality. Impaired sleep quality is commonplace within industrialized societies, as evidenced by the increasing number of prescription sleep aids available. Certain herbal preparations have been suggested to provide a natural benefit to sleep; however, limited controlled data are available documenting this benefit. In the present study we tested the effect of an experimental dietary supplement, containing the active ingredients Chlorophytum borivilianum and Velvet bean, on sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).

Can Promote Sleep by Increasing Your Melatonin Production. 5-HTP produces serotonin, which can be converted into the hormone melatonin. Melatonin plays an important role in regulating sleep. Its levels begin to rise in the evening to promote sleep and fall in the morning to help wake you up. Therefore, supplementing with 5-HTP may promote sleep by increasing melatonin production in your body. One human-based study showed that a combination of 5-HTP and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) significantly reduced the time it took to fall asleep, increased sleep duration and improved sleep quality. GABA is a chemical messenger that promotes relaxation. Combining it with 5-HTP likely has a synergistic effect.
